Character Counts

September 2, 2018

The prophet Isaiah has long been a source of comfort to God’s people. In the fortieth chapter of his book of prophecies, we find these words: “Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary...” He goes on to tell how this everlasting God helps and strengthens those who wait on him.

As I read these words this morning, it wasn’t the promises that struck me; it was these simple words: “He does not faint or grow weary.” To anyone who has fought against his or her personal demons or against the demonic powers that seem unleashed on this sad world, fainting and weariness are all too well known. It is not easy to maintain one’s strength in the battle against evil, whether personal or institutional.

Tonight, I am thankful for a God who does not faint nor grow weary of my weaknesses, failures, or stupidity. When I have grown weary, he has remained strong; when I have fainted, he has been steadfastly alert. And he is not rattled by the evil of this world. He does not faint nor grow weary. It’s not God’s promises, but his character that saves us.
