In the course of his message, he quoted a life-long friend’s words of wisdom:

So much modern Christianity has gotten in bed with the world, walking in such complete lockstep to a corrupt culture that other than some of the language we use and the fact that we get together to listen to speeches we call sermons, and songs we call hymns, it would be pretty hard to tell us apart from the average run -of-the-mill secularist.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">We would be much better off if there were more collision and less collusion with the world. I hear people say they want to make an impact upon society, but we forget that there cannot be an impact without a collision. I’m not an aggressive kind of man; I prefer quietly getting along with others, but I often wonder to what extent I’ve sacrificed my integrity because I didn’t want to have a collision. The letter of Paul that we call Colossians is filled with words that are on a collision course with the world around us:
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">”So if you’re serious about living this new resurrection life with Christ, act like it. Pursue the things over which Christ presides. Don’t shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ—that’s where the action is. See things from his perspective. Your old life is dead. Your new life, which is your real life—even though invisible to spectators—is with Christ in God. He is your life. When Christ (your real life, remember) shows up again on this earth, you’ll show up, too—the real you, the glorious you. Meanwhile, be content with obscurity, like Christ. And that means killing off everything connected with that way of death: sexual promiscuity, impurity, lust, doing whatever you feel like whenever you feel like it, and grabbing whatever attracts your fancy. That’s a life shaped by things and feelings instead of by God. It’s because of this kind of thing that God is about to explode in anger. It wasn’t long ago that you were doing all that stuff and not knowing any better. But you know better now, so make sure it’s all gone for good: bad temper, irritability, meanness, profanity, dirty talk. So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It’s your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it.“ —Colossians 3:1-8, 12-14
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">If these words aren’t aiming for a head-on collision with the world, I don’t know what would be.
meemabeepahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11886814596238693358noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-333332252409729439.post-54571717820991918632024-03-16T04:23:00.000-07:002024-03-16T04:23:11.810-07:00Be Afraid<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">March 15, 2024

I can tell you from my own experience that departing from evil can be very difficult. There are times I don’t want to do the right thing.

Numbers 32:23 says, “Be sure your sin will find you out.” The best way to depart from evil is to fear the Lord; what he thinks, and how he might respond if you do the wrong thing.

meemabeepahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11886814596238693358noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-333332252409729439.post-4888982311087321152024-03-14T19:02:00.000-07:002024-03-14T19:02:48.203-07:00Guidance<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">March 14, 2024

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">How can we acknowledge God in all our ways? It’s easy to say, but a bit harder to do. It’s easy to acknowledge God when things are going well, but what about when everything goes wrong? Acknowledging God doesn’t mean we have to be happy about bad stuff happening, but to look for what God may want us to learn through the bad stuff.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">We can’t learn courage unless we’re in a place where we are afraid. We can’t learn endurance unless we’re in a situation that’s hard. We can’t learn patience unless we have to wait. We can’t learn to love our enemies until they do something bad to us. We can’t learn to trust God until we are in a place where we can’t know for certain what our next step should be. Mother Theresa said, “You can’t know Jesus is all you need until Jesus is all you have.”

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">When we put God at the center of everything, he promises that he“ shall direct your paths.” Life often throws us for a loop. We had a plan and were following it; things were going well when suddenly out of nowhere we get hit with an unexpected catastrophe. What had been a clear path now is dark and obscure; we aren’t sure of our next step. It is unsettling, scary even.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">How can we know for sure that God is directing our paths when we can’t see where they are going? One way only: By believing that God keeps his promises. Even if we don’t know the way, he does. Matter of fact, He IS the Way (John 14:6). Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.” Back then, there were no bright flashlights to illumine the road far into the distance. Lamps were little, smoky, flickering flames that barely illumined the next step. God’s Word gives enough light for us to take the next step, but we must trust that even if we aren’t sure of our next steps, God is, and will not lead us astray.

meemabeepahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11886814596238693358noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-333332252409729439.post-86031681888537987992024-03-13T21:37:00.000-07:002024-03-13T21:37:11.413-07:00Trust
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 11px;">March 13, 2024

It’s one thing to trust in the Lord when all is going well, but how about when you fail that test, or your best friend turns against you, or you get really sick? Much of the time I think we trust in the Lord with part of our hearts, but not with all our hearts. What would it look like for you to trust in the Lord with ALL your heart? What would change?

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 13.1px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 11px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">The hardest part of these verses for me is that phrase, “with all your heart.” How can I be sure I am trusting with ALL my heart? After all, as I said once before, “the heart is deceitful above all things.” The closest I can come is to simply be honest with God: “Lord, as much as I am able, I will trust you. Reveal it to me whenever I am coming to you half-heartedly.” I believe God in his mercy and grace receives us as we are and as we want to be. If we come honestly, he’ll take care of the rest.

meemabeepahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11886814596238693358noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-333332252409729439.post-38725105950943922052024-03-12T18:30:00.000-07:002024-03-12T18:30:39.188-07:00Provision for Sin
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 13px;">March 12, 2024

When I was in college, I took a course in them from a professor that all my friends said was a terrible teacher. To those who know my own quirkiness, it should come as no surprise that I loved his course, and have loved the Minor Prophets ever since. Take for instance, this gem. Speaking of Israel who had repeatedly abandoned worship of the Lord for the false gods of the pagans, God said,

I’ve experienced a few personal setbacks in the last few years. When I retired, I planned to focus on ministry in Cuba. I had been working with my friend Joel Taylor who was an excellent visionary and administrator. He had plans for seminarios in Cuba, where he, along with educators and pastors he knew, would teach graduate level courses for the many young pastors who couldn’t afford to go to the state-accredited seminary in Matanzas. I was planning to work with him in this venture.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Then Joel got sick…cancer. Barely six months after he started feeling ill, he was taken from us. I didn’t know what direction to go; I’m not a systematic theologian nor a historian. Even teaching courses in Biblical studies would be a challenge for me. I’m a preacher and pastor; that’s it. So I was floundering.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Then our principal contact person for the Cuban ministry decided that he needed to come to the states for awhile. Cuba is a Communist/socialist country, and were keeping a close eye on our friend; so close that he thought he should come here and let things cool down a bit. What was supposed to be perhaps a six month hiatus turned into nearly two years.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">And then, Covid. Another two years before we could even seriously think about going back to Cuba. But last November, things began to fall into place. Talented people here were excited about the ministry, and it finally looked like things were going to take off. That trip however, turned out to be another knock in the head. Serious issues surfaced on the Cuban side, and separate serious issues developed here at home. All those plans made back in November evaporated almost overnight.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">So, what do you do when stuff like this happens? Do you conclude that God is shutting the door, or that the Enemy is trying to thwart our efforts? Do we stop, or press on? Those are not easy questions to answer, but let me give you a clue. Back in November when we were in Matanzas, I was asked to dedicate a sweet newborn baby. I had taught her mother and father in a parenting class the year before, and was honored to bless this child. Her mother had been in a Bible study learning Old Testament stories, and learned of Jael, who drove a tent peg into the temple of a sleeping enemy commander, pinning his head to the ground and winning a victory for Israel. Her mother decided that her baby needed to grow up to be bold and strong for Jesus, even in dangerous times, and so named her after this Old Testament woman.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Whenever I write to this woman’s pastors, I tell them to kiss and bless little Jael for me. Yesterday, they sent me the attached photo. Will I keep going to Cuba in spite of the difficulties and uncertainties? What do you think?
meemabeepahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11886814596238693358noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-333332252409729439.post-47638872204757409222024-03-10T19:38:00.000-07:002024-03-10T19:38:53.493-07:00A Blessing
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 13px;">March 10, 2024

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Psalm 23:1 “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.”

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">These words are perhaps the most well known in all the Bible. Even those who never darken the door of a church have heard them uttered in funeral services. This, along with the rest of the 23rd Psalm, has been a source of comfort to the grieving for generations.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">This first sentence has two parts: The statement of fact followed by the result of that fact; God is, followed by the implied therefore. If the LORD is my shepherd, some things naturally follow, the most important being “I shall not want.”

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">That little word, “want” may not mean what you think it means. Originally, like when used here, it meant “I won’t lack anything I need.” To be in want meant you didn’t have even the basic necessities of life. To not be in want meant having all we really need. Isn’t it amazing how that word has changed over the years? Now, we think of any trifling thing and say, “I want it.” We all want things; some things we want are good, some not so good. What we want can become a blessing or a curse because often the things we want in the short term keep us from what we want in the long term. God never promised to give us all the things we want, but instead is in the business of shaping our wants to his purposes, and giving us all we need to fulfill them.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">The Israelite tribes of Reuben and Gad had a lot of livestock, and when it came time to enter the Promised Land, they requested to stay on the east side of the Jordan River because it had good pastureland. Moses wasn’t impressed. “Shall. Your brothers go to war while you sit here?” he asked. They worked out a solution, but the question sticks in my mind.

The land was promised, but Israel had to fight for it. So do we.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

I may be in God’s land of Promise, but my heart is still filled with the enemies of God who do not give up their possession easily. When we read in Joshua, we learn that God’s enemies resort to deceit as well as all-out assault. I cannot sit here while there is a spiritual war going on.

That happened to me in this morning’s Men’s prayer time. We always begin with a psalm; today’s was Psalm 22, which I commented upon yesterday. Towards its end, the above words appear. It’s plain enough in the more conventional translation, but stands out in bold relief in Eugene Peterson’s The Message.

That last phrase as Peterson puts it, is particularly striking: “those who never got it together—worshiping.” I know a lot of people who never got it together, and I have often wondered about their eternal destiny. It is comforting to me to picture my friends Crazy Kenny, Rick the Roofer, my buddy James, all bowing before God Almighty in worship and praise. It’s not much of a stretch for me to see this in my mind’s eye; after all, I can picture myself doing so, and I certainly don’t have it all together.

He added, “For some, that will be heaven; for others, it will be hell.” I’ve thought about that many times over the years, and though it isn’t traditional orthodoxy, his view has some merit. Some would say it borders upon universalism, where everyone ends up saved. I’m not sure about that, but I do believe God’s grace extends further than mine, and that for everyone I’ll be surprised to see in heaven, there’ll be more than a few who are surprised to see me.

I certainly hope to finish well this race of life, but I also sincerely hope that those who have to be carried or dragged over the finish line will too join in the praise and worship the saints and angels offer before the throne of Almighty God:

The Gospel authors knew this psalm well, and remembered it when they wrote about the crucifixion. The sense of abandonment written here is palpable; perhaps worst than the physical pain of the cross was that for the first time in eternity, the Son of God who became sin for us (2 Corinthians 5:21), was separated from his Father, who in his holiness could not look upon sin. The intimate fellowship that heretofore was eternal, was broken in those moments. Jesus was absolutely, completely…alone, which is as accurate a description of hell as you’ll find anywhere.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

The psalm changes in verse 21. In the middle of what was a plea for mercy suddenly pops up the words, “You have answered me.” We don’t know at what point as he hung there that these words were uttered, but it must have been before Jesus cried with a loud voice, “It is accomplished,” and whispered, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” Jesus’ first words were directed to God; the intimacy had disappeared as he took on our sins. But at the end, he addressed God once more in the intimate term he used so often in his teaching—“Father…”

But what was actually true for him is never true for us. God never abandons us. Only his Son experienced total abandonment. We may FEEL alone, but even in our darkest hour, our Heavenly Father is with us. And as we pour out our hearts to him, we have the same assurance Jesus had: “You have answered me.” Not, “You will answer me,” but, “You HAVE answered me.” Even in your loneliness and despair, those prayers that seem to have bounced off the ceiling have already been answered. This is Good News, indeed!

meemabeepahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11886814596238693358noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-333332252409729439.post-15418595544360690342024-03-05T18:22:00.000-08:002024-03-05T18:22:50.841-08:00Grace Abused
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 13px;">March 5, 2024

It makes me want to say, “Israel, what were you thinking?” The problem was that they weren’t. We never are when we sin. St. Paul said that the god of this world blinds our minds. “Our MINDS.” I can’t remember a single time I’ve sinned that I thought I would get caught. We think we can get away with it, that the Scripture that says, “Be sure your sins will find you out” doesn’t apply to us.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

Presuming upon the goodness of God can take you to places you don’t want to go, and usually, like a flood, it carries along with you those you care most about. It is a wise person who knows how to pray, “Lord, preserve me from presumptuous sin. Hold tightly onto me when my grip upon you weakens, lest I profane your name and bring disgrace upon mine.”
meemabeepahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11886814596238693358noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-333332252409729439.post-61916932844226331472024-03-04T19:06:00.000-08:002024-03-04T19:06:07.809-08:00Sinless<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">March 4, 2024

They had been out of Egypt for forty years, but finally were on the border of their Promised Land. But to get there, they had to go through Moab. Moab’s king Balak was, along with his people, terrified. Forty years is a long time, but not so long that they had forgotten Israel’s miraculous escape from slavery. So Balak sent for help from the East in the form of a soothsayer named Balaam, who dealt in the occult arts.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

We don’t put much stock in such things today, but back then, a curse or blessing was considered powerful stuff. They understood the spiritual power of words more than we do, which is unfortunate, because our culture is filled with people who suffer the effects of curses. Parents berate and belittle their children in a twisted and distorted idea of punishment. These children are sworn at, negatively compared to others, told they are inferior, unacceptable, unwanted. Words have a powerful effect, both in cursing and blessing.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Even though Balaam was a practitioner of the occult, he knew of Israel’s God, and used his name in his incantations. He told Balak that he could only say what the LORD told him to say. Surprisingly, God actually spoke to this false prophet, and instead of cursing Israel, blessed them, much to Balak’s dismay. In his blessing, he said something utterly amazing:

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

How could God then say he had not observed iniquity in Jacob, or wickedness in Israel? Because of the last sentence in verse 21: “The shout of a King is among them.”

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

Our King, the Lord Jesus Christ, is among us, and he has taken our sins upon himself so when God looks at us, he sees no iniquity or wickedness. 2 Corinthians 5:21 spells it out for us:

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">This morning’s sermon text was Philippians 3:12-4:1. There’s so much in these verses that I could easily spend a week or more commenting on them, but for tonight, there’s just one thing that stands out to me.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">“I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me.” —Philippians 3:8-12

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Paul here tells us his life goal—to know Christ, and to fulfill the purposes for which God saved him. Of course, he gives us more detail than this, but the two “thats” are the clues to his intention. I suspect many of us would echo Paul’s desire; to know Christ and his life-purpose for us. As they say, the devil’s in the details. We want the end result, but often are reluctant to buy in to the process.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">To know Christ and his purposes, Paul tells us we must suffer the loss of all things. We don’t mind suffering the loss of some things; after all, the weight of sin, the expense and destruction of addictions are gladly dispensed with, but what about my comfort, my standing in the church or community? Am I willing to suffer the loss of my bank account, my retirement, my health, my friends or family?

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Do I want Christ enough to let go of all this? That little word “all” bothers me. I haven’t suffered much of anything in this world, so how much do I really know of Christ and his purposes? As I said recently, it’s not the things in the Bible I don’t understand that bother me; it’s the things that I do understand that bother me. Those words “the loss of all things” bother me…challenge me…convict me. But have they converted me?
meemabeepahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11886814596238693358noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-333332252409729439.post-89480722806560420582024-03-02T16:06:00.000-08:002024-03-02T16:06:26.473-08:00Average
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 13px;">March 2, 2024

I wonder how much the drive to excel is driven by pride. I’m glad I’m only average at most things I’ve attempted. I’m not even close to being an athlete, barely passable as a musician, pretty good as a preacher, a terrible administrator, but I believe I am a good husband, father, and grandfather.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Psalm 23 has long been a source of strength and comfort to God’s people. This morning, I started reflecting upon it with my grandkids. I suspect we’ll be camping here for some time, but instead of starting at the beginning (just saying that makes me want to sing “Do, Re, Mi” from the Sound of Music), I want to start tonight in the middle of the psalm. A pastor friend shared this morning from the words, “he restores my soul.”

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Have you ever needed that? I’m sure you have; I know I’ve needed that restoration time and again. Life has a way of draining us; if it’s not a major crisis that temporarily knocks us off our feet, the daily grind can wear us down. Solomon said it well: “The little foxes…spoil the vine.” (Songs 2:15)

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">I was once asked what qualities I bring to ministry. I thought about it and answered, “I’m an OK preacher and a terrible administrator, but the one thing I do well is, I don’t give up. I’m not aggressive, but when it comes to tenacity, I’m like a bulldog at holding on. But even for me, the little daily concerns, the weight of caring for people, and when I was actively pastoring, of leading the church, would over time simply take the wind out of my sails. At such times, my soul needed restoring.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">And it still needs restoring today. Just about the time I think I know what I’m doing and that life is settling down into a comfortable routine, something happens that blows it all to smithereens. I think it’s God’s way of making sure I keep trusting in him instead of my own wisdom and abilities. The challenges and switch-backs of life are not all bad; they can be gifts that keep us humbly calling out to God for the strength and wisdom we need to keep from going off the rails. One writer calls these “hard eucharistos,” ie. “difficult gifts of grace.”

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">So we return to that phrase, “he restores my soul,” with emphasis on the pronoun “he.” There’s only one place my soul—my deepest inner self—can be restored, renewed, revitalized, and that’s at the feet of Jesus Christ. He restores my soul—present tense, not “restored.” It’s a continual coming to Jesus so he can continually restore my soul. And if you come to him, he’ll restore yours, too.
meemabeepahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11886814596238693358noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-333332252409729439.post-66565895197429669092024-02-29T15:39:00.000-08:002024-02-29T15:39:56.654-08:00Caleb
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 13px;">February 29, 2024

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">Today’s reading is from Numbers 13 and 14, where we learn the people of Israel refused to enter the Promised Land because they were afraid of its inhabitants. Only Caleb and Joshua gave a good report, saying, “Don’t rebel against the Lord, nor fear the people of the land, for they are our bread; their protection has departed from them, and the Lord is with us. Do not fear them.”—Numbers 14:9

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">I’ve thought often about this chapter in Israel’s history. They had seen the power and protection of God; they had been delivered from slavery, guided through the wilderness, provided for when hungry and thirsty, all of which may have been part of the problem: They never shed their slave-mentality. They had been dependent so long that when offered the opportunity to take initiative, they choked.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">It is common in church settings today to hear lots of talk about “safety,” or “safe places.” Given the toxic nature of much of what goes on in society, I understand such talk, but it is not the primary concern of the Bible. We are called to challenge the world, to invade a corrupt culture with the Gospel, to be willing to be in conflict with a debased and degenerate society. It can be a daunting task; the obstacles seem overwhelming.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Twelve spies were sent into the Promised Land. They all saw the same things, but they didn’t have the same perspective. All the ten could see were the problems, the giants. Caleb and Joshua saw that these giants, though big, were powerless before them because the Lord was with Israel.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">I confess that often I feel like the ten other spies, and would rather play it safe than to suit up and face the challenge before me. There’s a part of me that says, “This is for younger men,” and “Do you realize how hard this is going to be?” Eleven years ago when Linda wanted to buy the home we now occupy, I told her, “You see the finished product; all I see is the work it will take to get there.”

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">But there is also a bit of Caleb within me, and even if I can’t get to the Promised Land myself, I want to be able to help someone else get there, by encouraging, assisting, and when possible, leading the way. We don’t get to see the end of the story until we read Joshua and hear Caleb say, “Give me this mountain!” I’m ready to go; my story begins here, but it will end on top of a mountain because God has given me a different spirit (Numbers 14:24).
meemabeepahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11886814596238693358noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-333332252409729439.post-27559786573439725362024-02-28T20:35:00.000-08:002024-02-28T20:35:58.312-08:00Tired
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 13px;">February 28, 2024

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">Today’s reading was Psalm 21, words I needed to hear this morning. I sometimes wonder if I’ll ever again wake up not tired. Saturday and Monday I slept in till 7:30, something I rarely do, but it didn’t seem to make much difference in my early morning weariness. When I sit down to read my Bible and pray, it’s a struggle to keep my eyes open. Sometimes it feels like I’m just going through the motions, but I am determined to keep at it.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Psalm 21 begins with these words, “The king shall rejoice in your strength, O Lord.” That’s good news. Revelation 1:6 and 5:10 says we are “kings and priests,” which means I can rejoice in God’s strength even when I don’t feel I have it. Usually, we want to feel God’s strength, or his wisdom, or his guidance long before we actually need it. We want to go into challenging situations feeling strong, or wise, or knowing how it will turn out. Instead, we must go into those circumstances not feeling, but trusting that the strength or wisdom or guidance will be there when we need it.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">If we felt the strength before needing it, we wouldn’t need faith, and God would be wasting the gift of strength by imparting it before it is needed. God wastes nothing, so he waits till the moment we need the strength or wisdom. In doing so, he wastes nothing, and places us where we need faith.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">So even though I woke up tired, I chose to rejoice because I know that when I actually need it, God’s strength will be there. Some were easy, some made me think outside the box, and some were just plain difficult. This morning’s prompt was “3 Ugly-Beautiful Gifts.”

She brings us her special brand of joy as one of our more independent granddaughters, who aspires to be a commercial airline pilot. In the meantime, she is a volleyball scholarship student at Edinboro University, popping in from time to time on weekends and breaks to say hello before she’s off on another adventure. She is the beautiful part of the ugly-beautiful duo.

I’d rather not comment on those. Instead, the ugly-beautiful today was the death of our Emma. Thirteen years ago when we brought her home from the Warren pet rescue, Linda thought she would be my dog, but Emma had other ideas. She was Linda’s dog through and through.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">We watched her go from repeatedly chasing balls the full length of our yard to letting the next generation do her running, but when we opened the back door at her incessant whining, she was off like a rocket, splashing across the creek after something we never could see. In the past few weeks, we had to coax her just to go outside, but she was mobile right to the end. We are grateful we didn’t have to put her down.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">You can see why this is “ugly-beautiful.” Kahlil Gibran said it well when he wrote that sorrow and joy are intimately intertwined, and we only grieve for what has been our delight. I don’t write these words to garner sympathy, but instead to affirm what I have believed for years, that we have a choice in matters like this: we can rail against death, or be grateful for the life we shared these past thirteen years. Emma brought us much joy, and we cherish and are grateful for the memories on this ugly-beautiful day.

meemabeepahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11886814596238693358noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-333332252409729439.post-44844112004486021022024-02-26T18:44:00.000-08:002024-02-26T18:44:58.916-08:00Hope
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 13px;">February 26, 2024

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">There are many benefits to living in modern USA. We have pretty good health care, a standard of living far beyond the wildest dreams of most of the world’s people, opportunities that beckon millions of immigrants, both legal and illegal.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

In spite of the benefits and blessings, the rate of drug abuse and suicide, especially among young people, is catastrophic. I believe much of it is driven by the isolation fomented by social media, the breakdown of the family, the constant barrage of bad news from major media, and the secularization of our society and its resulting loss of faith and hope.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

They’ve been sold a bill of goods by society; they’ve been told that they are oppressed and deprived, and at the same time, are told there isn’t anything they can do about it. When kids are told they can choose their gender identity without regard to biology, and that how they feel is paramount and unchangeable, the normal confusion of those years becomes a permanent trap and an unbearable burden.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">If I only look around me, I too, would be depressed and discouraged. There isn’t a lot of good news in the world today, which is why the promises of Scripture are so important to me. My hope is in the Lord who sees and holds the future securely in his grip. He is Lord whether I believe it or not, but it is in believing, in trusting in him that hope springs up. That hope engenders joy and peace. I don’t have to worry about tomorrow if I am trusting in Christ. And if I’m not worrying, I can be joyful and enjoy peace.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">The key to it all is trust. I must decide if I will place my trust in a God I cannot see, or in the events I see unfolding all around me. The flip side of it is this: If I am lacking in joy and peace, it is indication that my faith and trust needs adjusting. And that happens only when I dive into the Scriptures. Earlier in Romans 15, Paul reminds us that it is “through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures” that we have hope (v.4), and that “faith comes by…the Word of God” (Romans 10:17).

meemabeepahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11886814596238693358noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-333332252409729439.post-20278007582572754982024-02-25T18:32:00.000-08:002024-02-25T18:32:46.749-08:00Choose
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 13px;">February 25, 2024

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Quite often, I expect God to speak to me as I am reading my Bible and praying, but it’s not uncommon for me get to the end of my “devotional time,” close my Bible and think to myself, “Well, I didn’t get much out of THAT!”

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">But then there are those times when God speaks almost out of the blue, like this morning in Sunday School. We were talking about how easily we worry about the future which we cannot control, and how that worry so occupies our minds and hearts that we miss God’s work of grace in the present moment. At the end of our time together, pastor Roy quoted from Luke 10, the story of Mary and Martha:

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” —Luke 10:38-42

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">I can’t remember Roy’s comment on these verses, but I recall vividly Jesus’ word to Martha about her sister: “Mary has CHOSEN…” So often, we deceive ourselves into thinking that our worry and anxiety are afflictions over which we have little control. Our culture is overwhelmed with anxiety; we swallow pills by the handfuls, trying to medicate away our dis-ease, and pay psychologists and counselors big bucks trying to find some relief from the stress of everyday life.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-emoji: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">We fail to see what Mary seemed to have understood intuitively, that sitting at the feet of Jesus is the best antidote to stress, but that one must choose to do so, prioritizing his presence over the pressing issues of life. Too often, I find that I choose poorly, putting time with Jesus on the back burner of life. When I do that, stress intensifies. Time with him puts things in perspective, reducing my worry and increasing my peace. But I have to choose.
meemabeepahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11886814596238693358noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-333332252409729439.post-29661203576513645532024-02-24T16:50:00.000-08:002024-02-24T16:50:16.294-08:00Vacations
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 13px;">February 24, 2024
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">Leviticus 23-25 outline the various feasts God commanded his people: Firstfruits, Weeks (Pentecost), Trumpets, The Day of Atonement, Tabernacles, and the Seventh year Sabbath, and the Feast of Jubilee. Most of these were week-long celebrations. The latter two involved giving the land an entire year of rest; no cultivating, planting, or pruning.
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Did Israel actually keep the year-long abstinence from agricultural pursuits? I don’t know, but I do know that God values our times of rest more than we do. If we took this many vacations, we would worry about our productivity, or whether people would think we are lazy, but I wonder if our incessant labor is indicative of our failure to really trust God, or of our desire to have more than God intends for us. What do we sacrifice of our relationship with God by our constant busyness?
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">These “vacations” weren’t merely times to get away from it all. They were given as opportunities for us to draw closer to God. Vacations that merely focus on what we want to do miss the point. Our focus should be on what God wants. If I am feeling agitated because I’m not getting anything done, it could be indication of how far I’ve drifted from God’s intention. If I’m not resting in Jesus, where am I resting? Do we use our “vacation” time to draw close to Jesus, or do we cram it so full of activity that we are more worn out when we return to work than when we left?

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">This psalm is a wonderful prayer for protection and help in time of trouble, but there is a detail often overlooked in the midst of it. We love to quote the fourth verse—“May He grant you according to your heart’s desire, And fulfill all your purpose,” but it’s easy to take it out of context. What if my heart’s desire is for revenge, or lust, or extravagant accumulation of wealth? What if my purpose is nefarious? Will God grant those kinds of desires?

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">That fourth verse is dependent upon the third verse—“May He remember all your offerings, and accept your burnt sacrifice.” We don’t offer burnt sacrifices any more. Jesus’ death on the cross was full payment for our sins, but what the third verse tells us is that the one who first prayed this prayer was careful to obey the will of God as revealed in the Levitical law. He acknowledged his sins, and sought forgiveness and cleansing, all of which means his heart’s desire and his life’s purpose was to be in fellowship with God.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 15.5px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 13px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">The only way we can expect God will grant our heart’s desire is if that desire is to do the will of God. If my purpose is to honor God, I can pray this prayer confidently, knowing that my purpose aligns with his.

meemabeepahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11886814596238693358noreply@blogger.com0
