Floods

April 3, 2020

“The LORD reigns, He is clothed with majesty;
The LORD is clothed, He has girded Himself with strength.
Surely the world is established, so that it cannot be moved.
Your throne is established from of old; You are from everlasting.
The floods have lifted up, O LORD,
The floods have lifted up their voice;
The floods lift up their waves.
The LORD on high is mightier Than the noise of many waters,
Than the mighty waves of the sea.
Your testimonies are very sure; Holiness adorns Your house, O LORD, forever.”
Psalm 93:1-5 NKJV

Years ago, our son Nathan wrote a song based on Psalm 93–“The floods have lifted up.” Floods do that. They lift up and carry off everything in their path. Before them is a peaceful scene of plenty; they leave devastation in their wake. They are noisy. Their sound is heard even behind closed doors. Floods change everything they touch. COVID-19 19 has hit like a tsunami, wiping out global markets, jobs, social networks, and confidence. Many who spoke so confidently of the future and their place in it are now questioning even their faith, while others cling vainly to a notion that everything will soon be back to normal.

But floods change things.

Psalm 93 however, assures us that no matter how loudly the flood waters rage, no matter how destructive of life, relationships, jobs, and finances this COVID-19 may be, “The LORD on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, than the mighty waves of the sea” (v.4). That the present trial is mighty, there is no doubt, but our God is mightier still..

The psalm ends with these words: “Holiness adorns your house, O LORD, forever.” Floods will come and go, but our God is forever. We are being tested as to whether or not we truly believe this. It matters not whether we feel it at the moment; the question is, “Do I believe it?”

Nate, lift up your voice and sing this song again! It is a song for today. Floods come and go, but the LORD, his house, and his holiness, is forever.
