Trap

April 2, 2019

She makes her father proud. Granddaughter Madeline texted me this morning asking if I wanted to watch her shoot trap for her school. I hadn’t known until recently that schools still had trap teams, but hers does, and she’s one of only three girls on it. When her father learned of the existence of the team, he immediately asked her if she’d like to join. When she said yes, he took her to a local gun shop and bought her a 20 gauge pump shotgun. I guess you could say he was pumped about it.

She practiced, and today was her first actual meet. When her first two shots pulverized the birds, her father turned with a fist pump and a “YESSS!” For someone who had never even held a shotgun a few weeks ago, her score of 11 out of 25 was pretty good, especially as she wasn’t feeling too well today. Matt loves shooting, so having a daughter who loves it too creates an extra special bond. For a girl who as a toddler had surgery on one eye to correct a problem, the hand/eye coordination for this sport is testimony to her determination to succeed. She tried soccer and softball, didn’t particularly like either of them, but trap is another story. I was honored to have her invite me to watch, and if her father is proud, her grandfather is doubly so, and thankful to have been witness to her success today.
