Our Crowns

 January 12, 2024

“Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of children is their fathers.”

—Proverbs 17:6

For the first time in a long time, we had more than just a couple of the grandchildren here for “Meema Night.” College, sports, jobs, and boyfriends/girlfriends have thinned the crowd, but everything fell into place tonight. We missed the oldest two granddaughters who are living in Churchville, NY, Mattie who is already back at college, and grandson Nathan who was visiting friends.

Linda and I have been privileged to have our grandkids in our lives more than most. We never imagined it would be this way; that all three of our kids would live within walking distance and the cousins would grow up more as siblings than cousins. When they were little, having them overnight two Fridays each month gave their parents a break and the opportunity to be with their friends without having to pay babysitters. What started out as a convenience to them turned into a major blessing for us.

We sit around the dinner table, talking and laughing. We share the highs and lows of the day, play table games or watch movies together, and end with prayers blessing them in the name of the Lord Jesus. Morning is breakfast of pancakes, sausage, and eggs, or waffles. It never grows old even if we do. We know this season is passing, and are grateful for it. We’ve been able to build into our grandchildren even as we built into their parents. Not many grandparents can say that. To us, they truly are as the Scripture says, “the crown of the aged.”
